SAPPHIRE EXPEDITION (PHASE 2)                         (date-22/04/25)

Promoting Sri Lankan Gems in the USA

We embarked on the second phase of our sapphire expedition, building on the experience and insights we gained during our previous visit to the gem mines of Ratnapura in December 2023, particularly in Kuruwita and Nilangama. This time, we returned to the Ratnapura District, where we explored a traditional mine in the village of Karapincha—a site known for both its historical hand-dug mines and nearby mechanized mining operations.

Traditional mining is an age-old craft involving the excavation of deep, square-shaped pits supported by wooden frameworks. These wooden walls are reinforced with sera leaves, which help maintain the structural integrity of the mine. A rope-hung bucket serves as a lift system, allowing workers to descend into and ascend from the mine. A thick communication pipe is also lowered into the shaft, functioning as a one-way audio system. In emergencies—such as a wall collapse—this pipe can even serve as a temporary lifeline, allowing liquid food to be sent to trapped miners until heavy machinery arrives to clear the debris.

This traditional method covers a relatively small area and progresses slowly, making gemstone discovery less frequent. However, both traditional and mechanized mining operations use a profit-sharing model, meaning all workers benefit more when higher-value gems are found.

In contrast, mechanized mining spans much larger plots of land, leased from private owners with approval from the Sri Lanka Gem & Jewellery Authority. Excavation continues until the gem-bearing Illama layer is reached, with water continuously pumped out to keep the site dry. Although this method requires a significantly higher investment, it typically yields more rough gemstones—provided weather conditions remain favorable.

Importantly, once a mechanized mining project is completed, the land must be restored to its original condition. Failure to do so results in penalties from the Gem & Jewellery Authority of Sri Lanka.
